1999 Soil Sampling: Seneca Mine, Hayden Colorado
Phosphorous
• Nitrous Nitrogen
Potassium
Zinc
Iron
Manganese
Copper
Sodium Adsorption Ratio
Organic Matter
pH
Electrical conductivity
Percent Saturation
Vegetation- Vegetation was observed qualitatively for vigor, color, growth form, and
overall vegetative appearance both above and below ground. Above ground plants
were observed for ground cover density, basal area, growth form vigor, color and
height. Below ground plant roots were observed for vigor, abundance, size,
distribution, and depth of penetration. A general site photo was taken at each
sample location along with 2 photos of the ground taken from a height of 6 feet at a
60 degree angle to the ground.
• Results
Results for the Seneca II and Seneca II-W follow:
Seneca II
2 sites were sampled on approximately 50 acres of land. Field descriptions are
located in Appendix IV and lab data is located in Appendix II.
Topsoil- Topsoil in both sample pits classifies as suitable topsoil (Appendix III,
Table-2). The results follow:
Depth- The average depth of topsoil is 11 inches (.9 feet). Depth of topsoil
ranges 10 to 12 inches (.8 to 1.0 feet). The topsoil in both sample pits
consisted of two horizons. The upper horizon averages 5 inches of thickness
and ranges in depth from 5 to 5 inches in thickness. The lower topsoil horizon
averages 6 inches in thickness and ranges from 5 to 7 inches in thickness.
The difference in horizons is due to structure and dry and moist consistence
discussed below. All other characteristics between horizons are the same.
Textures- Textures are loams. Clay content averages 25 percent and ranges
22 to 27 percent, sand content averages 40 percent and ranges 39 to 40
. percent. Silt content averages 35 percent and ranges 34 to 38 percent.
02/09/00
