1999 Soil Sampling: Seneca Mine, Hayden Colorado <br />Introduction <br />Seneca Mine, Hayden Colorado contracted with Intermountain Resource Inventories <br />Inc., James R. Irvine, CPSS ARCPACS #2404, principal investigator to conduct on <br />site soil sampling. Soil sampling was conducted to comply with Permit C-80-005. <br />This report outlines the procedures, results and conclusions obtained during <br />sampling and after sample results were returned from the laboratory. <br />Sampling Location <br />Two sites were sampled. The first site is located at Seneca II-W mine. The second <br />site is located at the Seneca II mine. The first site consisted of approximately 200 <br />acres. Seneca II-W has been seeded for approximately three years with a grass <br />dominant mixture. 10 samples were examined at this site. The second site consisted <br />of 50 acres, half planted with a grass dominant mixture and the other half planted to <br />a shrubland community. It is in its second season of growth. Sample locations are <br />shown in Appendix V, maps 1 and 2. <br />Sampling Procedures <br />For both sampling areas, sites were chosen at random within 25 acre blocks. <br />Sample sites are located on maps 1 and 2 (Appendix-V). In the field, the sample <br />sites were Located using GPS and recorded. Sampling methodology was consistent <br />. at both sites and occurred June 29'h through July 3`d 1999 during the height of the <br />growing season. <br />Soil- Once a site was located in the field, Seneca Mine personnel excavated <br />sampling pits with a backhoe to a depth of 5 feet using a 3 foot wide bucket. <br />Exposed pits provided adequate room to determine topsoil horizons from upper spoil <br />horizons. Horizon delineation based on soil color, texture, consistence, coarse <br />fragment content, chemical reactivity, root penetration, and structure was recorded. <br />Photographs were taken of each sample pits soil profile with horizon depths <br />delineated for the photo. Horizons were labeled A indicating horizons developing in <br />topsoil and B for soil developing in the upper spoil material. One-half gallon samples <br />were collected from each horizon in the soil profile for laboratory analysis. Samples <br />were collected using stainless steel shovels and placed in sterile Tyvek® sample <br />bags. Bags were label as to site number, horizon and depth recorded in inches. <br />Samples were sent to Colorado State University Soil, Water and Plant Testing <br />Laboratory, Fort Collins Colorado for analysis The University conducted the following <br />tests with soil analysis methods listed in Appendix III Table-1. <br />Texture <br />CaCO3 Equivalent <br />Selenium (subsoil only) <br />Calcium <br />• Magnesium <br />Sodium <br />Page 4 of 11 <br />02/09/00 <br />
