C. F. & I. CANON CITY QUARRY REPORT
CRITERION
Many criteria have been advanced to limit the amount of vibration to assure
that no damage results to residential structures fran blasting operations.
The criterion in use is the United States and the maJority of the world is
a limiting amount in terms of Particle Velocity.
In 1962, the United States Bureau of Mines published a review of criteria
for estimating damage to residences from blasting vibrations (Duvall &
Fogelson, 1962). This review included a survey of these papers:
1. lhcerren & Winder (U.S.B.M. Bulletin 442) 1942
2. Iangefurs - Nitro Nobel (Sweden) 1957
3. Edwards & Northwood (Canada 1960 with quantitative blast vibration
data and associated structural damage observations.
It was concluded that Particle Velocity was the most closely related to the
degree of damage, taking the variation of data gathered, the Bureau stated
(Bulletin 656 - 1971):
"Wave motion that have a peak particle velocity in excess of two inches
per second have a fair probability of producing damage to structures
(residential}, whereas wave motions that have a peak particle velocity
less than two inches per second have a very low probability of causing
arlY damage. ~~
VME - COIARADO
