,~
III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII` ~~~ ,~~,
INTERNAL MEMO
TO: Dan Mathews 13 August 2001
FROM: ]im Burnell
SUBJ: Deserado AHR Review
Dan, finished with the Deserado AHR review.
The Division has completed review of the Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) from the Deserado
Mine for the 2000 water year. In general, the report confirms that the predictions made in the
probable hydrologic consequences section of the permit (PHC) are being met.
You noted that the operator said that a variation in TDS in alluvial groundwater was predicted in
the AHR. I don't see such a prediction at all.
PHC: The impact of mining on the quantity of water in the White River will be minimal.
This appears to be the case. There is minimal impact to the quantity of flow in the White River
as a result of the mining operations.
PHC: The local rate of runoff of surface water will increase.
There is no evidence from the AHR that this is the case. The AHR doesn't demonstrate any
impact.
PHC: There will be a temporary increase in total suspended solids (TSS) to the receiving
stream.
There is no indication in the AHR that there is any impact from suspended solids to the receiving
stream.
PHC: The effects of subsidence in Red Wash and Slumgullion Gulch will be short-lived.
This proved to be true.
PHC: Refuse disposal effects on surface and groundwater will be minimal.
There is no evidence of impact on groundwater or surface water from the refuse. This may be in
part attributable to a well which was not appropriately designed to sample groundwater moving
away from the pile. The current well has been dry. This could, in fact, reflect a complete
absence of groundwater in the vicinity of the pile, but that's unclear.
PHC: Very little water will be pumped to the surface from the underground mine. .
This is the case, as described in the AHR.
