The plan proposed to divide the field into 4
quadrants, with each of these quadrants receiving four different treatments. These
treatments include: haying/no grazing; haying and winter grazing; winter grazing only
and a control with no grazing and no haying. (See attached research plan map.)
This plan was partially implemented in 1989. In reviewing this plan, along with Dick
Antonio, Bill Jennings, Elaine Smith and the Hogan Bros., a number of concerns
arose.
1) Most of the area originally marked for haying is unsuitable for haying
due to topographic and irrigation constraints.
2) The proposed control area is a dense tall grass prairie community
including a substantial Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) population.
Observations show that the orchids do not establish themselves
amongst this dense vegetation.
3) There is concern about when to hay the fields. The plan's haying time
corresponds almost exactly with the orchid's peak flowering time,
