Dennis Jones
Seneca Coal Company
Page 2
August 14, 2001
standazds. Please note that Stream Segment 13d is a new stream segment description that has
recently been added to CDPHE Regulation No. 33. The Division recommends that for future
AHRs, surface water samples from the Yoast Mine site be compazed to the stream segment
standazds provided in CDPHE Regulation No. 33.
3. SCC provided a good discussion on groundwater quality trends and comparative analysis
with water quality standazds. On several occasions, samples from groundwater monitoring wells
exceeded the Basic Standards for Ground Water provided in CDPHE Regulation No. 41.
Specifically, SCC indicates that iron and manganese exceeded the applicable CDPHE standazd.
Please note that the Division has adopted changes to our surface and groundwater monitoring
Rules as of March 21, 2001 (refer to Rule 4.05.13). The rule changes incorporate compliance with
applicable groundwater standazds at established points of compliance. The Division is in the process
of implementing the point of compliance rules. Additional information regarding downgradient
groundwater quality and/or additional groundwater monitoring points may be required to establish
appropriate points of comp]iance.
If you have any questions concerning the Division's review of the 2000 AHR, please contact me.
Sincerely,
!'1 P.15~.~/
Michael P.
