SHELTON, Director
DATE: August 6, 1987
T0: Peter O'Connor
FROM: Steve Renner .
RE: CHIMNEY ROCK MINE 1986 ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT (FILE N0. C-81-023)
I have reviewed the 1986 Annual Hydrologic Report (AHR) for the Chimney Rock
Mine.
Surface Water
A comparison of upstream (site S-1) and downstream (site S-3) water quality
data indicates that the Chimney Rock Mine is having an insignificant affect on
Stollsteimer Creek. No measurable increase in chemical constituents was
detected between these two water quality sampling sites. The AHR indicates
that sediment pond 005, located adjacent to Stollsteimer Creek, discharged
infrequently during the reporting period. Analysis of the pond effluent
indicates that no NPDES limitations were exceeded. No other pond discharged
during the reported period.
Ground Water
Water quality analysis of alluvial wells completed near the mine site indicate
that the mine is currently not impacting the Stollsteimer Alluvial Valley
Floor (AVF). The data appears to demonstrate that the AVF is in direct
hydraulic communication with Stollsteimer Creek, as previously thought.
The East Pit backfill aquifer is apparently still developing. Well W-16
monitors the development of this spoil aquifer. During the reporting period,
the average depth to water was -92.8 feet, showing slight increase over
previous years. It is thought that this slow increase in water level will
continue over time.
Recommendations for future hydrologic monitoring and reporting are:
1. As noted in correspondence dated May 7; 1986; the operator should conduct
an alluvial spring and seep survey of the reclaimed East Pit. Mine
personnel should walk the east side of this reclaimed area shortly after
Stollsteimer Creek peak flow has occurred. Any springs or seeps issuing
from this area should be plotted on a map. An estimate of discharge
should also be made at the time of the field visit. If no springs or
seeps are observed, this should be noted as this is an equally important
observation:
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
