On January 8, 1999 White River Nahcolite
(WRN) personnel were tfying to establish barren liquor flow to #lA recovery well through use of
wash water pipeline. Plugging problems following a two day boilout are normally addressed by
dilution of the recover flow. Because of freezing temperatures, WRA didn't want to charge the
entire wash water line to provide dilution water to well 1 A-SHR. Across over rubber hose
(4'x2") was used just east of water well 90-1 to connect 6" barren pipeline to 2" wash water
pipeline. WRN employes;s opened the valves and observed no leakage at cross over hose.
Employees proceeded to well l A-SHR to check for leaks. After 10 - I S minutes, employees
returned to cross over hose to discover the hose had ruptured. The valves near the cross over
hose were immediately turned off and flow was suspended. New hose had been ordered for
future work. Water from the leak soaked into the snow and the ground quickly, no clean up was
possible immediately after the spill. Next summer, if damage to vegetation is noted, the area will
be reclaimed and reseeded as necessary.
If there are any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Ed Baker, REM
Environmental/Safety Mtfnager
cc: Colorado DMG
Corporate E/S Manager
White River Nahcolite Minerals, Llmlted LIabllity Company
P.
