Soil Salvage. Storage and Replacement
_ Soil salvage (disturbance) areas and soil stockpiles sites as of December 31, 2001 are shown in the 1995 Annual
• Reclamation Report, Exhibit 9-3a. Topsoil stockpile volume information is presented in Table 00.2. Approximately
8.Ocre-feet of soil remained in stockpiles as of December 31, 2003.
Soil Redistribution Thickness Updated
SCC will follow the final reclamation topsoil management plan approved in TR-31 for the remainder of the Seneca
II Mine life since it covers all of the remaining disturbed lands which need to be topsoiled.
REVEGETATION
Seeding apd Shrub Planting
Permanent revegetation activities in 2003 included planting and seeding of shrubs as described below, and drill
seeding with permanent Seed Mix #1 at a rate of approximately 15 lb. per acre (see Table 00.2).
A total of 8,000 shrub seedlings were planted in one concentrated planting in 2003.Table 00.4 shows approximate
acreages, species composition, and the total numbers planted by species. All plant materials were one-
• year-old containerized nursery stock.
The seedlings were grown and planted by Bitterroot Native Growers, Inc. (BNG) of Hamilton, Montana. Tree
Guard browse repellent was placed on all planted seedlings. Al( seedlings were treated with a mycorrhizal fitngi
inoculum that was developed at the BNG nmsery. Plantings were completed in late September 2003 in reclaimed
sites that were disked several times during the growing season to control established herbaceous vegetation and
prepaze the site for planting. The heavy disking created numerous planting microsites. Dozer push-ups created
additional micro-sites for the seedlings. All of the Narrowleaf Cottonwood seedlings were planted along the
drainage upstream of pond 008.
Weed Control
Survey for noxious weeds was carried out on the Seneca II Mine permit area in 2003. Monitoring was conducted in
2003 [o determine the need or level of retrea[ment necessary for areas sprayed in 2003. Canada thistle Cirsium
• 3
