David Berry - 2 - October 23, 1995
the wells has increased as the mine has filled. The water in the
mine has no doubt flowed through the fractured B-Seam coal and has
likely been in contact with caved areas. The quality of water in
these two wells should be representative of the post mining water
quality in the B-Seam. PBR's Map E8-3286 presents the location of
these monitoring wells.
Geochemical data from the roof, coal and interburden of the B-Seam
indicates the presence of soluble calcium, magnesium and sodium
(ref. Bear permit page 2.04-24a and PBR permit page 2.05-20vi).
The Bear B-Seam floor coal has a soluble calcium, magnesium and
sodium content of 8, 3.6 and 95 mg/1 respectively. The Somerset B-
Seam coal has an average soluble calcium, magnesium and sodium
content of 2.1, 4.1 and 114 mg/1 respectively. This data shows the
relatively high soluble sodium content in the coal and also
presents a correlation between the coal from the north and south
sides of the river. Conductivity of the coal seams is also similar
with the PBR B-Seam having an average value of 0.60 mmhos/cm and
the Bear coal having a value of 0.53 mmhos/cm.
The total dissolved solids (TDS) content in a well provides a
fairly good indication of its water quality. The maximum recorded
TDS value for MCC's four B-Seam wells varies from 1000 to 4200
mg/1. If well SOM-127-H is deleted from the data base, the maximum
TDS value for the three remaining B-Seam wells varies from 1000 to
2500 mg/1.
PBR's two monitoring wells, H-10 and B-6, have been monitored since
1986. The period of record reviewed for this report was from 1986
through 1991. The maximum TDS value for the two B-Seam wells
varies from 4780 to 4890 mg/1.
The following table compares selected analytical data from the five
monitoring wells. The data clearly shows that the water in wells
H-10 and B-6 is of poorer quality than the water in MCC's
monitoring wells.
MAXIMUM VALUES
Alkalinity Magnesium Sodium TDS Iron
SOM-C-72-H 408 2 387 1006 0.31
SOM-129-H 2950 3 1060 2530 0.94
JMB-12 1335 21 606 1336 84.1
H-10 (PBR) 2460 42 1780 4780 39.0
B-6 (PBR) 2770 29 1920 4890 39.0
