The final location of the well was
to be mutually agreed upon by the Operator and the Division. Both
the Operator and the Division have looked at potential locations
for the well and no good locations have been identified. For this
reason, the Division asked the Operator to determine if it can
predict the potential effects that mining would have on the B-Seam
aquifer based upon available monitoring information collected by
Mountain Coal Company (MCC) and Pacific Basin Resources (PBR). The
Division indicated that if the prediction could be made, then the
requirement to drill a B-Seam monitoring well could be waived.
The Operator obtained B-Seam monitoring data from MCC's 1992 - 1994
annual hydrology reports. This information will be compared to
PBR's monitoring data from its abandoned and flooded Somerset Mine,
B-Seam workings.
MCC has four wells completed in the B-Seam, SOM-C-72-H, SOM-127-H,
SOM-129-H and JMB-12. SOM-127-H was lost due to subsidence and
replaced by SOM-129-H in 1993. Also, monitoring of JMB-12 was
initiated in 1993. According to MCC's annual hydrologic reports,
none of the wells have been in place long enough to identify
specific mining related trends. The quality of water in SOM-127-H
does not correlate with the other three monitoring wells. MCC's
Map 55 presents the location of these monitoring wells.
PBR's well H-10 and B-6 are completed in abandoned workings of the
old Somerset Mine. B-6 was an methane gas relief well and H-10 was
and electrical borehole. Therefore, both wells intersect the mine
workings and are not completed in solid coal. The water level in
