Kvaerner Metals Project No. 306900
General Specification No. GC-01
Site Work
1 . Excavation of hard, cemented or rocky soils requiring ripping by D9L, single
shank, dozer in low gear will be classified as Rippable Excavation.
Excavation shall not be made below grade shown on the drawings, except where
removal of non-suitable material necessitates over-excavation. Material removed
below grade shall be replaced with approved material thoroughly compacted as
specified in Section 5.2, or Section 5.3, as directed by the Engineer.
Spring or seepage water encountered shall be reported to the Engineer. If the
drawings do not indicate drainage facilities, provisions for the permanent
drainage of such water shall be made as directed by the Engineer.
The sequence of all excavation operations shall be such as to ensure the most
efficient utilization of excavated materials in embankments and fills.
Side slopes of cuts in alluvial soils or in residual soils shall not be steeper than
1 two horizontal to one vertical. Side slopes of cuts in weathered rock shall
conform within limits shown on the drawings or shall not be steeper than one
horizontal to one vertical.
Excess excavated material, or materials not suited for use in embankments and
fills, shall be disposed of in spoil areas shown on the drawings or approved by
the Engineer.
5.2 General Embankment and Fills
Areas to be filled including berms around ponds shall be cleared, grubbed and
stripped to competent natural soil. Prior to the placement of any fill, the subgrade
shall be wetted as necessary and compacted to the same requirements as the
overlying fill. Where thickness of fill is less than one foot, the surface shall be
scarified and re-compacted.
Embankments and fills shall not be started until the area has been inspected and
approved by the Engineer.
All embankments and fills shall be keyed into the existing hillsides by cutting
horizontal benches before placing and compacting the fill materials. Side slopes
of fill shall not be steeper than two horizontal to one vertical, unless shown
otherwise on the drawings.
Embankment and fill material shall be obtained from excavation of natural soil
within the plant site or approved borrow sources. Embankment and fill material
shall be reasonably well graded from 6 in. to fines, with no material larger than 3
in. in maximum dimension in the upper one foot. Fill material shall have a
maximum percentage of fines (minus #200 sieve) of 35 percent by weight, a
liquid limit of less than 35 and a plasticity index of less than 20. Frozen material
shall not be used. Material shall not be placed on frozen ground.
'0
If the on site soil materials obtained from excavation of natural soil within the
I plant site is used as fill material, it shall be placed in uniform lifts of about 6 inches
J:110691WP1,SPECLSiRIlC71OO01SPC.DOC, Rav. ~1~ CJ PmbC JuN 27, 1999
