<br />The drill logs, physical examination of recovered samples and <br />continuous observation of drilling operations provided a clear <br />' indication of the heterogeneous nature of the pile with respect to <br />moisture content, density, composition and texture. Typically, <br />saturated intervals were separated by dry intervals, drilling <br />' effort varied from very hard to very soft, refuse material by <br />definition is comprised of various material types and recovered <br />samples varied from almost cemented fine grained refuse material to <br />very coarse refuse material. Because of the obvious heterogeneous <br />nature of the pile it is not surprising that a complex network of <br />varying pore pressures are in effect. Thus, information regarding <br />the pore pressure system derived from the present investigation <br />' should only be considered reliable for the specific slope cross <br />sections under consideration and for a limited area surrounding the <br />specific drill location. Drill hole logs are presented as Plates <br />' 12 through 25 of the Appendix. <br />As noted above, a total of 30 hydraulically isolated <br />piezometer wells were installed in 5 different drill holes at <br />' depths determined by conditions encountered during drilling <br />operations. Several (2 to 8) piezometers were installed in each of <br />the five drill holes. Piezometer installation was accomplished by <br />' slotting 1/2-inch diameter PVC piezometer tubes along a limited <br />interval which corresponded to wet intervals identified by drill <br />logs, providing a silica sand pack around the slotted interval and <br />' then sealing the top of that interval of the hole with a thick <br />bentonite slurry which was tremmied into place. , In addition to <br />placing slotted piezometer tips ir. discrete moisture bearing <br />intervals or zones within the pile, two piezometers were installed <br />' in the bottom of each hole, one sealed in the foundation alluvium <br />and the second sealed just above the contact between the pile and <br />the foundation.
