The azea is nearly flat with a gentle slope (<1°) to the north and east. Reclamation and
• coincident revegetation within this azea took place in 1986. Replaced soils were sandy in
texture.
Cool season graminoids dominated the 1986 reclamation azeas this season. Widely scattered
individuals of Yucca glauca (yucca) were encountered. Area 4 has two distinct vegetation
types. The topographically elevated azea at the north end of the pazcel is dominated by
Calamovilfa longifolia, Andropogon hallii and Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem). In
the lower azea, at the south end of this pazcel, Bromus marginatus dominates, with
contributions by the warm season grasses Panicum virgatum, Schiwchyrium scoparium, and
Andropogon hallii. Very few weedy species were observed. Total vegetation cover was
estimated at 40-45 percent. Total herbaceous production was estimated at 150 g/m2 (1337
lb/ac). No evidence of pests or diseases was identified in any of the 1986 reclamation azea
parcels.
3.2.3 1987 RECLAMATION AREAS
The 1987 reclamation azea encompasses approximately 48 acres of reclaimed pit and adjacent
azeas in the south central azea of the Keenesburg Mine permit area. The 1987 reclamation azea
is composed of two pazcels (Areas 11 and 17) separated by a north-south haul road condor
and two narrow reclamation parcels (Areas 9, 10, and 16). The entire 1987 reclamation azea
is nearly flat with a gentle slope (<1°) to the south and east. Reclamation and subsequent
revegetation within this area took place in 1987. Replaced soils were generally sandy in
• texture. Area 9 was mowed in the autumn of 2004 to reduce standing litter.
The 1987 reclamation areas were visually dominated by cool season wheatgrasses, Bromus
margirratus, and Calamovilfa longifolia. An azea immediately adjacent to the undisturbed
range on the south is significantly drier and contains Yucca glauca and Artemisia frlifolia.
Vegetation cover was estimated at 55 percent. Overall herbaceous production in this azea
was estimated to be 175-200 g/m2 (1560-1783 Ib/ac). No evidence of pests or diseases was
identified in this azea.
3.2.4 2000 RECLAMATION AREAS
Two former haul road corridors were seeded to the permanent seed mix in 2000, the corridor
(Area 19) between Areas 11-13 and 20 and 22, and the condor (Area 6) southeast and east
of the 1987 east pazcel. Both azeas were interseeded in 2003 to the perennial revegetation
mix.
In several locations within both areas, significant perennial graminoid growth was present,
particulazly Bouteloua gracilis and Panicum virgatum. In azeas bordering native range,
annuals (Kochia scoparia and Bromus tectorum) dominated. As noted last season, Kochia
scoparia serves as a cover crop and moisture holder (particularly snow) for perennial
graminoids, providing shade and desiccation protection for developing perennial graminoids.
Total vegetation cover was estimated at 35 percent. Total herbaceous production was
• estimated to be between 75 and 100 g/mZ (668-891 lb/ac). No evidence of pests or diseases
was identified in this azea.
Coors Energy Company Page 14
2004 Revegetation Monitoring Report
