The water within the perched aquifer flowing into the mine
probably comes from surface water infiltration along the faults
east and west of the mine. This assumption is supported by the
cyclical nature of water inflow corresponding with periods of
precipitation. Both faults have ephemeral drainages crossing
their surface trace near the mine and may receive water from the
drainages . The water then infiltrates the coal seam which has
become saturated over time.
MUNGER CANYON MINE
To date there has been no water encountered by this mine;
therefore. there has been no effect on the hydrologic regime of
the area. A current mine workings map is included as Figure 2 and
Table 1 documents that there has been no water imported or used at
the mine.
PRECIPITATION
The 19B9 water- vear was the driest of the der_ade (See Table 3 ) .
Only 13 . 28 inches of precipitation fell durinu the year . This
quantity was 65% of the aver, iue for the decade. Most of the
precipit&,cion occurred as snow between November and March (9 . 22
inches ) . Om y about 4 incites of precipitation fell during the
er owing season . As can be e:•:uected g i vcn zhuse quantities ,
streamflow was minimal .
EFFECT OF THE MINES ON THE EAST SALT CREEK REGIME
Surface Water
Due to the limited disturbance of the mines there is little chance
That any sicnificant effect the quintiry or- quality of the
_.urface wateis near either mine sites has occurred. As the
Division notes in its approval Package for the Munger Carrv,o;l Hine.
the total area that will be disturbed by both mine sites amounts
to 0 . 12 percent. of the area of the East Salt Creek drainage nasin
above the mines .
Surface water samples are beinci taken on both McClane Creek ( SW-2
and SW-S ) . Munger Creek (SW-3 ) . and Est Salt Creek (SW- 1 _-rid SW-8)
as required by the approved monitorina program. Results or _ire
quarterly samplinu for each monitorinu site _-re shown on laole 1 .
Both McClane and Munger creeks were dry most of the year . is
should be noted that most of the time sampling was attempted
durino rainstorms . It takes an intense storm to cause the creek
to run. Many times these events occur late at night or at other
times when emplovees are not present. As rioted earlier the
precipitation in the area decreased significantly this vear ,end
even East Salt creek was dry during the Third quarter of 1989.
Place - 3 2/ 19/90
