• Directly above the Hunter Canyon Formation is the Wasatch Formation. I[ ranges from 280 fr. to
790 fr. of variegated clay shales of fluviatile and lacustrine origin together with a few beds of
sandstone. The bulk of the formation is made of sandy and silty shales with sandstone constituting
less than 3 percent of the rocks in the formation.
Mining Summary
During the year mining was done at both the Roadside North Portal (RSN) and the Roadside South
Portals (RSS). In the RSS, mining was done in the 6th and 7th East Panels. The 6th East panel was
stopped approximately 1200' short of projections due to poor mining conditions, especially roof
control problems. At this point we were 700' short of underniining the high voltage power line
shown in several of the pictures. This panel was mined with a continuous miner and the Joy FCT,
continuous haulage unit, discussed in the 1995 report. The FCT was removed from 6th East in June
and moved to the adjacent 7th East panel. Mining continued in 7th East until the end of October
when mining was discontinued for economics reasons. All mining was discontinued in the RSS for
the remainder of the yeaz. With the FCT no secondary mining was done. Pillar spacing varied from
70x70' entry and crosscut spacing to 80x90' entry and crosscut spacing. The larger spacing was
used in an attempt to improve roof support and mining conditions. The majority of the mining was
done on an 80x80' spacing resulting in an extraction ration of 42%.
In the RSS, mining was done in the 3 North Mains and the 5th West panel. The 3 North Mains was
• mined northerly toward the lease boundary but was stopped 600' short due to poor mining
conditions. A 6th West panel was proposed but dropped because 3 North did not extend far enough.
Mining was started in 5th West in August and continued in that panel through the end of the year.
Mining was done using a continuous miner and shuttle cars. The entry and crosscut spacing for the
3 North Mains ranged from 70x 100' to 100x 100' resulting in an extraction ratio of 41 to 34%. For
the 5 west panel the pillar spacing was 70x120. The extraction ratio for the panel was 39%. No
secondary mining was done during the yeaz.

Projected Mining_
During 1997 mining is projected to continue only in the RSN. The 5th West panel will be
completed with no secondary mining being done. The 4 West panel will be developed and
secondary mining will be done on the way out of the panel. Secondary mining is projected to have
an extraction ratio of 70 - 80%.
Surface Inspection
Two inspection routes were walked in the spring of 1996 and one route was walked in the fall over
areas projected to be mined or already mined areas over the RSS. Two inspection routes were
walked over the RSN. Photographs were taken of the area and the routes taken were marked on a
• Page 2
