• and most of the previous water quality samples were analyzed by ACZ Laboratories, Inc.,
Steamboat Springs, Colorado, a USEPA-CERTIFIED laboratory. This report includes
data collected specifically to meet requirements of the Division of Minerals and Geology
(DMG), and data collected to meet requirements of the Colorado Wastewater Dischazge
Permit System (NPDES permit). A list of all monitoring stations within the angle-of-
draw of the mines is presented as Table 5. it can be noted that eight additional stations
were added as a result of mining during this reporting period.
NPDES MONTTORING POINTS
The mine has six (6) NPDES discharge monitoring points (see Map No.'s 4-1, 8-1,
and 8-3). All six points were monitored according to permit requirements during periods
of discharge. Two of the six discharge points experienced discharge during 1996.
Outfall 001, consisting of effluent from a wastewater treatment facility, discharged
.continuously throughout the year. Outfall 006, a sediment pond at the West mine
respectively also had reported discharge. Copies of the DMG cover letters provided to
the Colorado Department of Health (CDOH) and Environmental Protection Agencies are
included in the data summaries following this narrative.
OVEM GROUNDWATER MONITORING WELLS
Groundwater monitoring wells' BO1 through B08 is near the East Mine facilities (see
Map No. 8-1). Well B07 was monitored for annual water quality parameters as it is
downstream of the East mine facilities. Wells BO1 through B06 and Well B08 are
monitored semiannually for water levels to assess slope stability in and around the East
mine facilities.
Patterns typically associated with these wells in the past were again evident during
the 1996 monitoring. Wells BOI, B03, BOS, B06, and B08 remained dry throughout the
year. Wells B02 and B04 showed moderate water level's fluctuations within the
established normal ranges previously documented. Conductivity values at B07 remained
within the range of values previously established. Other monitored parameters fluctuated
slightly with established ranges. The 1993 report showed that sulfate and total dissolved
solids may be slightly elevated at B07. In 1996 sulfates averaged 255 mg/1 compared
with the 1993 average of 380 mg/1. The 1996 TDS average values were 850 compared
• with the 1993 average of 1, l88 mg/l. The 1992 AHR presented minimum and maximum
Page -2-
