Site 93-4. The western half of the site received an application of DEVR INOL/GOAL
• pre-emergent herbicide in a tank mix with eater for an applied rate of 1.5
lb AI per ac re. The eastern half of the site was disced only.
Site 93-7. Application of DEYRINOI/GOAL pre-emergent herbicide in a tank min with
water for an applied rate of 1.5 lb AI pe r acre. The entire site was
treated.
Discing and herbicide treatment of the sites were conducted to reduce herbaceous
competition and extend the effectiveness of herbaceous vegetation control. Vortions of
several sites were not treated with herbicides in order to evaluate the effectivenss of the
two pre-emergent herbicides.
One prepared site, 93-5 (Exhibit 93.5), was direct seeded ui [h a shrub seed mix; no
herbaceous species were included. This site is approximately 0.6 acres in size. The
species composition of this mix is shown in Table 93.4 The site was prepared by discing
twice during the growing season. The shrub mix was broadcast seeded a[ this site in fall
1993.
• Need Control. Survey for noxious weeds was carried out on the Seneca 11 mine permit area
in 1993. Areas where weed control was required are shown on Exhibit 93.5. Because the
1993 weed control activities included some small scattered spot control areas, all sites
which were sprayed may not be shown. Those areas where control activities were more
extensive are shown on Exhibit 93.5 as shaded areas (see legend). Monitoring was conducted
in 1993 [o determine [he need or level of retrea tment necessary for areas sprayed in 1992.
Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) was the primary target species in all control areas, with
lesser activity directed towards areas of whitetop (Cardaria drabs). The applied herbicide
consisted of a tank mix of 2.5 gallons of 22k Tortlon and 0.5 gallons of Banvel with 250
gallons of water. Control areas were sprayed in June. A spot spray gun was used to
concentrate control activities on target areas, reducing potential impacts to adjacent
desirable vegetation. the herbicide mix, based on recommendations from the Colorado Slate
Extension Service, was mixed and applied under [he supervision of the Seneca Mine
Reclamation Supervisor who is a certified applicator. The ue ed control areas will continue
[o be monitored in 1994 for effectiveness and necessary retreatment.
•
11
