1.0INTRODUCTION
' Mining at the Deremo #2 mine site began circa 1958. Ore mined from the site was processed for its
uranium and vanadium content. Mining operations at the site ceased circa 1989. Reclamation activities
' are controlled by the Colorado Division of Mining and Geology under Permit #M/7'1/288. Currently,
' the site is undergoing reclamation activities performed and managed by:

The purpose of this project was to investigate a diesel fuel spill, which occurred at the site sometime in
the past from an AST for diesel fuel. Two ASTs, one 20,000 gallons capacity and one 8,000 gallons
capacity, were installed circa 1975 and removed circa 1993. A small (one inch) diameter fuel line
reportedly distributed diesel fuel from the ASTs to the underground mine shaft. The small distribution
line was routed to the mine through a borehole located in the immediate area of the ASTs. An electric
fuel pump and shut-off valve were controlled by switches located underground. Reportedly, no leaks
ever occurred within the underground mine from this distribution line.
Umetco personnel performing site reclamation work first noticed soil-vapor odors while moving mine
spoils in the area with heavy equipment during August 1997. The time period during which the leaking
' occurred is not known. The quantity of fuel spilled is also not known.
' 2.0 SITE DESCRIPTION
2.1 General
' The subject site is located in the south half of Section 2, Township 42 North, Range 2C West of the Ute
Meridian in San Miguel County, Colorado, approximately 14 miles northwest of Dove: Creek, CO (see
Figure 2-1), at an elevation of approximately 7,090 feet above sea level. The terrain is a gentle slope to
the southwest. The surface land use in the vicinity is primarily agricultural.
