1
INITIAL SITE CHARACTERIZATION REPORT
' of the
DIESEL ABOVE GROUND STORAGE TANK FUEL SPILL
at the
DEREMO #2 MINE SITE
located near
DOVE CREEK, COLORADO
' EXECUTIVE SUMMARV
' Umetco Minerals Corporation (Umetco) contracted Tellco Environmental (Tellco) to investigate a fuel
spill, which leaked from a diesel above-ground storage tank(s) (AST) at the subject site, and to collect
' data necessary to prepare an Initial Site Characterization Report (ISCR), in accordance with the
Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, Oil Inspection Section document: "Storage Tank-
Facility Owner/Operator Guidance Documents, July 1, 1995". A site investigation was performed on
August 27, 1997, and included exploratory excavations (trenches), Photo Ionization Detector (PID)
' soil-vapor measurement observations at numerous points, and the collection of samples from twenty-
four(24) sampling locations.
' Direct PID measurements taken at various locations (using a Photovac Model 2000) were used to plan
the subsequent soil sampling locations. Observed PID measurements of soil-vapor -anged from 0 to
900 parts per million (ppm). Laboratory analysis of soil samples measured total Benzene. Toluene,
Ethylbenzene, and Xylene (BTEX) levels ranging from no-detect to 9.4 mg/Kg; and measured Total
Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TEPH) levels ranging from no-detect to 25,000 mg/Kg. No
' benzene was detected in the laboratory analysis of any of the soil samples.
i
