• Sorter

One Radiometric Sorter consisting of a mechanical self-supporting structure
for the support of the sorter components. The sorter is equipped wi~~;h three
channels capable of discriminating between ore and non-uranium bearing waste
rock.
Ore from the vibratory feeders is conveyed through the sorter on a nominally
36 inch wide nylon woven belting with polyurethane covers top and boi:tom and
travelling at about 200 feet per minute.
The return portion of this belt is equipped with belt cleaning facilities
supplied by Ore Sorters Ltd. and is connected to a water line.
The washings from the belt are discharged below the sorter into a washings
conduit. (See Figure 3.1-1)
The conveyor belt is driven by a 3 h.p. 440 volt, 3 phase motor through a
suitable gear reduction mechanism.
Each channel of the sorter is equipped with three blast valves for the
deflection of selected ore-bearing rocks.
B. Electronic Equipment
• Gamma Ray Detector
Each channel is equipped with a one per channel, 2 inch diameter by 1 inch
thick Nal(TI) crystal, optically coupled to a photomultiplier tube of a type
similar to the "Integral Line" type 'S' supplied by the Harshaw Chemical
Company. The scintillation detectors are housed in a removable drawer within
the main lower lead container of the sorter.
The pre-amplifier, amplifier and gamma energy discriminator for each ~~hannel
necessary for acquiring gamma ray counts are also part of the gamma r,3y detector
system.
Video Detector
A Reticon Line Scanner and means of illumination (lamps with intensity of
15,000 lumens) necessary for generating gating signals and effective ~^ock
areas are an integral part of the sorting circuit.
Logic
One logic unit per channel is part of the system and functions to correct the
gamma count appropriate to a rock for the geometry of the rock, and t~~ deter-
mine whether or not the normalized count exceeds a pre-set "cut-off" level.
(0.015 U30g)
• In the event that a rock exceeds the cut-off level, the logic unit directs
the opening of the air blast valves to deflect such a rock away from :hose
ore particles whose corrected gamma count does not exceed the cut-off level.
1-4
