1996 Production'and Geologic Conditions
Approximately 605,650 tons of coal was produced from the Mine in 1996 under
Federal Coal Leases C-37210 and C-53356. Production was sustained during the
entire year.
Mining at the West Mine during 1996 entailed both panel advancement and pillar
extraction. Panels advanced were 1 Right, 2 Right and 2 '/z Right. Panels in which
pillar extraction took place were 2 Riglrt and 2 %z Riglrt, however, pillar extraction
was minimal due to a large bounce that occurred May 10, in Panel 2 Right. As a
result of this bounce, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rescinded
Bowie No. 1 Mines' Pillaring Plan. It was later decided and approved in a site
specific plan that only bottom coal could be mined in rooms developed off2 Right
for the remaining portion of the panel.
Development of 2 '/z Right Panel began in July of 1996 and ended in October due to
poor coal quality. A full pillar extraction plan approved by MSHA was
implemented during retreat of 2 '/z Right, but due to excessive abutment loads in the
• section, only a small area was actually pillared. The remaining portions of 2 %z
Right was limited to only mining bottom coal.
Development of `I' Panel began in June and is currently still being advanced. No
retreat mining has been done in this panel.
See Map No. 2-5 which presents the location of the reining performed during
1996.
Panel 1 Right:
Mined Length: Panel 1 Right was developed approximately 450 feet in 1996.
There was no pillar extraction in Panel 1 Right during 1996.
Overburden Thickness: Varying from approximately 1,300 ft. to 1,620 ft.
Mining Height: 9 to 11 feet on advance.

Page -2-
