Ash Disaosal
DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES
at the Keenesburg site through the end of 1999 is 437,106 tons.
During 1999, a total of 39,139 tons of mixed fly and bottom ash were
transported to and disposed of at the Keenesburg Mine site. Because the
reclamation of A-Pit was completed in 1999, this entire quantity of ash was
directed toward the filling of B-Pit. The 39,139 tons of ash was placed in
South B-Pit, bringing the total B-Pit ash to 192,757 tons (5,667 tons in North
B-Pit and 187,090 tons in South B-Pit). The total amount of ash disposed of
The only ash accepted for disposal at the Keenesburg facility is that which
was generated by coal consumption at the Power Plant located on Coors
Brewing Company property in Golden, Colorado. Since September, 1995
this Plant has been owned and operated by Trigen-Colorado Energy
Corporation. According to the agreement between Trigen and CEC, the ash
will continue to be used for reclamation purposes at the Keenesburg site.
• During 1999 the source of steam coal supplied to fuel the Trigen owned
Power Plant was a mix of coals from Cyprus-Amax Twentymile Mine,
located near Steamboat, Colorado, and Bowie Resotuces, Ltd. Bowie #2
Mine, near Paonia, Colorado. The Twentymile Mine provided the steam coal
requiretent for the first quarter of 1999, with a transition to Bowie #2
occuring toward the end of that quarter. Then, in the tnid to late portions of
the fourth quarter, Twentymile again supplied quantities of steam coal while
Bowie #2 transitioned to a longwall operation. Throughout the year, Bowie
continuously provided the full stoker coal requirement for Trigen (about 12%
of the total coal supply). Permit documentation exists to address the disposal
of ash from both of these supply sources.
Aslt "grab" samples were taken at the Trigen Power Plant at the end of 1999.
Samples of both fly asl~ and bottom ash were collected and submitted for
testing. The samples were analyzed using the Toxicity Characteristic
Leaching Procedure (TCLP), and for radioactivity. Copies of these analyses
are included in this report.
Monthly aslt disposal reports, summarizing the disposal activity at the
• Keenesburg Site, are also found in this Section.
AHR-1999 -82- Stipulation #24-25
