INSPECTION OF ACTIVE ELRFAS 2-3 .4 and Sa
The Deserado mine has been operating at a greatly reduced capacity since the fue rmderground. The
preparation plant was operated only seven days during the quarter. Very little re6rse was deposited
in the refuse pits during the second quarter.
There are no apparent points of seepage, or indications of slope failure on the atxive piles.
The surface drainage facilities were adequately maintained and were wortdng property.lbTmor rilliag
in the 100 yr. ditches was repaired on a contimring basis. A technical revision ('TR-39) is being
prepared to address the ongoing erosion and mnimenarrce of the 100 year and in-pit ditches.
No subdrain system is requ~*ed by ~~~r ^~_^~+t, e~ g_^tMh.~.:^z::a-w-5g~ans fcr L'te disposal site
revealed no ground water presern. Permanem out slope remain at appra~rimately 80% complete on
the toe of sub-area 2-3 and approximately 50% complete on the tce of sub-area 4. These slopes
appeared stable. Pit 5 consists of a thin layer of refuse over the entire area. A groundwater
monitoring well had been drilled between sub-areas 1 and 2-3. To date na water has accumulated in
the well.
At the end of the second quarter a total of 1,879,469 tons of refuse have been placed in sub-azea 2-3,
a total of 1,339,155 tons of refuse have been placed on sub-area 4, and a total of 228,134 tons of
refuse have been placed in sub-area Sa.
A total of 2 compaction tests were performed on sub-azea 5-a. This particular area, nor any other
area had enough material for a wmplete lift to be constructed. The particular area tested was actively
bpi^g comr~ete'. Bot : u4e cot;pa~tiun Yeais well exceeded the required 90% of Proctor for the
refuse material.
Both the topsoil and subsoil piles for sub-areas 2-3 and 4 have been seeded and are stable. All of
these seeded areas plus the area disturbed during the reclamation of sub-area 1 show vegetative
growth. The topsoil and sub-soil piles along with the pond and other disturbed areas associated with
pit Sa mostly covered with vegetation despite a dismal growing season so far this year. All organic
material and topsoil was removed prior to the storage of refuse in all areas.
Sub-azea 1 has been reclaimed and is no longer in use.
