Boulay,
The following summarizes site maintenance and reclamation activities that occurred at the Marx
Mine and associated Loadout during 2002. Active mining and related activity was suspended and
final reclamation activities were initiated in early 1993. At the end of 1999, approximately 357
acres had been reclaimed in the Maxr Mine and Loadout areas, with approximately 44 acres of
roads, facilities, sediment control stmcmres, and soil stockpiles remaining. A portion of the
remaining total acreage is associated with long-term facilities that have been approved for
permanent retention in conjunction with the postmining land use. Disturbance areas reclaimed in
1999 included the Loadout Area; a portion of the shop/warehouse facilities pad; and the former
powder magazine area, soil stockpile area, and associated road.
Except for the Loadout Axea, which was seeded to the permanent revegetation seed mixture, areas
reclaimed in 1999 were initially seeded to the annual rye mulch crop, followed by the permanent
revegetation seeding in 2000. As part of Kea's regular site maintenance activities and consistent
with any concerns noted by the DMG in their regular site inspection reports, surface water control
strucmres were inspected. Based on inspection, the surface water control structures were in good
condition and no repairs were necessary.
Areas identified during the 2001 bond release inspections as presenting erosion or revegetadon
concerns were repaired and reseeded to control erosion. Inspection of these areas in early 2002
indicated limited vegetative growth, so additional seed was interseeded into the existing vegetation.
Aggressive noxious weed control measures were implemented in 2000 in several areas to control
and eliminate localized weed infestations. These measures were effective, and year 2002 weed
control activities were limited to inspection and manual control (digging and disposal) of scattered
occurrences of thistle (primarily scotch thistle). EFCI had planned to conduct grazing activities
during 2002, however due to drought conditions, EFCI and the DMG determined that grazing
might not be beneficial and EFCI did not proceed with planned grazing.
During 2002, EFCI coordinated with the DMG, BLM, and OSMRE to identify, plug, seal, and
reclaim a number of old exploration boreholes and alluvial monitoring wells, primarily in the Kea
North Area north of the County Road. This work was completed in October 2002. Map 1, 2002
Reclamation Map, outlines the general location and extent of site maintenance and reclamation
activities completed during 2002. These activities are described in more detail in the following
sections.
P.G.
