f . lyethews, Dan
From: Mathews, Dan
Sent: Monday, December 12, 2005 1:06 PM
To: 'Rossi, Liza'
Cc: Brown, Sandy
Subject: RE: Seneca Mines Aerial Big Game Surveys
Thanks Liza,
I will relay your comments to SCC
The big game survey has been conducted for many years, beginning at some point in the 1980's I believe, and has been
reported annually in a wildlife monitoring report that has at times been submitted as a separate report, and at times
included as a section within the annual reclamation report. It looks like we have electronic versions of the reports going
back to about 1990 in our imaging system. We probably have archived hard copies for pre-1990 reports.
In the II-W permit, there is a committment within Tab 23, Fish and Wildlife Plan, that contains the following language.
"Because CDOW has defined the mine region as winter range for elk and deer, an annual winter aerial census will be
conducted on the Seneca II-W permit area and a two mile perimeter. The census flight will be made during December
through early February of each year and species occurrence, total numbers, and distribution will be recorded."
It would probably be appropriate for us to forward a copy of the wildlife report to you each year as it is received. This may
or may not have been done at times in the past, but if so the process broke down, and I know it has not been the case for
several years. f will plan to provide a copy to you beginning this year. If you wish, I could also make arrangements to get
previous year's reports sent to you.
Let me know if you have additional questions or comments
Dan
Dan
-----Original Message-----
From: Rossi, Liza [mailto:Liza.Rossi@state.co.us]
Sent: Monday, December 12, 2005 11:22 AM
To: Mathews, Dan
Cc: Haskins, Jim
Subject: RE: Seneca Mines Aerial Big Game Surveys
Dan,
I have talked this over with Jim Haskins. It is a bit difficult for us
to addresses your question adequately because we do not know the
reasoning behind the original permit requirement. However, if the
intent was to gather information on WINTER distribution and numbers,
then December through early February is probably better. March seems to
be getting late to get a good picture of winter use. Normally snow
covers the ground in the Hayden area prior to March so it is not
necessary to wait until March. Also, if they have been collecting these
data for a long period, then it seems to make sense to continue to
collect the data during the same time period (December through early
February) for consistency.
I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you need more
information.
Are any of the big game count data ever forwarded to the CDOW? Jim and
I were not really aware to the counts prior to now.
