October 2000 -26- 003-2191
. Ancient soils have been developed on many of the alluvial deposits. The ancient soils
aze of two facies and range widely in degree of development. One facies is a brown
soil characterized by a brown surface horizon and an accumulation of iron and clay in
the B horizon (the zone of maximum illuviation and structure), and a calcium
carbonate in the parent material. The degree of development of soil-profile
characteristics such as color, stntcture, consistence, and reaction (pH), ranges
progressively from the oldest to youngest soils.
Strati" granhy
The stratigraphy of the site is characterized by the monitor well drill holes and the
data collected from those holes. Six drill holes were made and completed as
monitoring wells in a manner to gather geologic information and as much down-hole
data as possible. Cutting samples were taken every five feet and retained for
description by a professional geologist. Geophysical logs, gamma ray and neutron,
were run on each of the holes to aid in the lithologic determinations. The gamma ray
log reads the natural gamma radiation of each formation, whereas the neutron reads the
relative porosity of the formations from bombazding the formation with neutrons and
capturing the return rate. Higher neutron readings indicate no water present, whereas
low CPS rates indicate the presence of water. The neutron log is definitive in locating
water levels and the presence of water in sands. When used in tandem, the two logs are
useful in sand/shale determinations and to recognize the variations in the stratigraphic
intervals of the matrix including the presence of water. Additionally, the H-P water
well located in the center of [he site has a SP/resistivity ]og through the Fox Hills
formation. When combined and correlated these tools can be cross-referenced to the
cuttings on a hole by hole basis to fully identify the stratigraphy. Borehole and
geophysical logs for all holes drilled on site are presented in Appendix 1.
The local geology on the site is characterized by a series of unconsolidated sands, clays,
• sandstones, shales (i.e., claystones), and conglomerates.
