Bowie Resources Limited
Bowie No. 1 Mine
1997 Annual Hydrology Report
The 1997 samples and most ofthe previous water quality samples were analyzed by ACZ
Laboratories, Inc., Steamboat Springs, Colorado, a USEPA-CERTIFIED laboratory. This
report includes data collected specifically to meet requirements of the Division of Minerals &
Geology (DMG), and data collected to meet requirements of the Colorado Wastewater
Discharge Permit System (NPDES permit).
A list of all monitoring stations within the angle-of--draw of the mine is presented as Table 5.
Twenty three (23) additional stations were monitored this year, including 7 Ponds, 9 Springs, 4
Shallow Monitoring Wells, 1 Drill Hole and 2 Surface Water monitoring points, to re-establish
baseline information for firture East pod mining activities.
NPDES Monitoring Points:
•
The mine has six (6) NPDES discharge monitoring points (see Map No.s 41, 8-1 and 8-3)_ All
six points were monitored according to permit requirements during periods of dischazge. Three
of the six dischazge points experienced discharge during 1997. Outfall 001, consisting of
e~uent from a wastewater treatment facility, discharged continuously throughout the year.
Outfall 006 and Outfill 002 experienced discharges due to the heavy rainfall occurring in Juoe •
(see Precipitation Table). Copies ofthe DMG cover letters provided to the Colorado
Department of Health (CDOH) and Environmental Protection Agencys are included in the data
summaries following this narrative.
OVEM Groundwater Monitoring Wells:
Groundwater monitoring wells BO1 through B08 are neaz the East Mine Facilities (see Map No.
8-1). Well B07 was monitored for annual water quality pazameters as it is downstream of the
East mine facilities. Wells BOl through B06 and Wel! B08 aze monitored semi-annually for
water levels to assess slope stability in and around the East mine facilities.
Patterns typically associated with these wells in the past aze again evident during the 1997
monitoring yeaz. B03 has became blocked and can no longer be monitored for field parameters
or water quality. Wells BOl, BOS, B06 and BO8 remained dry throughout the yeaz. Wells B02
and B04 show moderate water level fluctuations within documented ranges. The conductivity
values at B07 remain within the range of established values. Other monitored parameters
fluctuated slightly with established ranges. The 1993 report showed that sulfate and total
dissolved solids maybe slightly elevated at B07. In 1997 sulfates averaged 280 mg/1 compared
with the 1993 average of 380 mg/1. The 1997 TDS average values were 790 compazed with the
1993 average of 1,188 mg/l. The 1992 AHR presented minimum and maximum values during a
record from 4/83 to 10/92. The range for sulfite was 64 to 731 mg/L The range for TDS was
Pege 2 of 7
