There are a number of items
concerning wildlife that is suggested you address in your study. These
deal mostly with the present as well as some of the projected use of
the area by the various species of wildlife.
In changing much of the area from a basic terrestrial wildlife
• habitat to amore aquatic type habitat will impact in a negative way,
most of the present species. This would be very pronounced in the
deer herd as the area under consideration is bounded on [he east and
northeast by Rabbit Mountain, which is part of the Boulder County Parks
and open space, which prohibits any hunting. This in turn will put
further stress on the remaining habitat and most likely create some
major damage problems for the adajacent landowner's, namely the Young's
and Parrish's.
The newly created reservoir will attract waterfowl almost immediately.
Buffer zones will need to be addressed to allow far nesting, feeding and
harvest purposes. These should be zones of limited human activity and no
developement.
A reservoir in this location should provide some excellent fishery
possibilities. Due to the shallow shoreline profile it should develop
into a warm water fishery for such species as bass, perch, walleye and
channel catfish. Public fishing should be allowed with the Division of
Wildlife manageing it.
The prairie dog population supplies a forage base for several species
of raptors on a year around basis. This includes a wintering population
of 12 to 14 Bald Eagles, which spend an average of S months to a year in
the area.
•
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. Clyde O.
