• 6rovnd Water Level Summary. AL1 alluvial cells are showing distinct seasonal water level
fluctuations in response to periods of precipitation recharge or the lack of
precipitation. Overburden and coal well eater levels are fluctuating in response to the
precipitation recharge, induced ground water flow to the mine pits, and in some cases,
changes in reservoir water levels. Spoil yell water levels still indicate that only the
furthest dorllslope highwall portions of the spoil exhibit significant amounts of
saturation. Levels rn a spoil well near the Wadge Iv~oundment rs largely controlled by
water level fluctuations in the impoundment. Water levels in several cells this year were
higher than they have been before as a result of high spring runoff. Dewaterinq by the
Wolf Creek coal mine pit has resulted in lover than normal eater levels in most of the
yells monitoring that seam.
Water puality. Ground rater sasples were collected from 19 yells on a biannual basis. In
addition, one cell (90y42) that is required to be sampled did not have enough rater to
sample. The parameter list used for all cells sampled in 1995 is given on Table 4.
Analyses have been performed by AC2 Laboratory in steamboat 9pzings, Colorado since May
31, 1993. AC2 Laboratory performs all analyses by EPA or equivalent methods. samples are
• delivered the day of collection to the lab in an iced cooler.
The folloring dlacussron of the analytical data collected during the reporting period is
arranged by strata being monitored and coincides with the format (by aquifer type) in
which the analytical data are presented in Appendix D. The discussion of rater quality
rill be limited to a deaeript>.on of total dl ssolved solids (TD S) concentrations. A
separate section, Comparison of Ground Water puali ty to Water Use Standards, rill d1aCU99
ally limple9 thdt exceed riCGL naG 9tandard9.
Data for each yell in this appendix beings with a listing of the water quail ty data
collected during this year, followed by remarks explaining the sartplinq procedure. This
ie followed by a plot of TD9 versus time for the entire period of record. The regression
line on this plot is generated by a method mown as LOWS99 (Locally Weighted 9catterplot
8moothinq). A smoothness factor of 0.5 (on a scale of 0 to 1) was used. Finally, this
plot is followed by a table listing historic TD9 valves and percent millequivalents for
major ions.
• Alluvium. Well 32 is located furthest upstream on Little Gras ay Creek. Eeyiew of the TD9
plot indicates an increasing trend. This is due to the contribution of eaters from Spoil
5
