INSPECTION OF ACTIVE AREAS 2-3 . 4 and Sa The Deserado mine has been nearly idle for the entire quarter due to a lay-offofa majority ofthe work force. No refuse was deposited in the refuse pits during the third quarter. There are no apparent points of seepage, or indications of slope failure on the active piles. The surface drainage facilities were adequately maintained and were working properly. Minor rifling in the l00 yr. ditches was repaired on a continuing basis. A minor revision was made to the permit to add rip-rap to the inlet of RP Sa pond, and to both the 100 yr. ditch going into that pond and the undisturbed drainage ditch protecting the RP Sa refuse area. RP 2-3 and RP 4 sediment ponds were cleaned during this quarter. No subdrain system is requved by our permit, as geotechnical investigations for the disposal site revealed no ground water present. Permanent out slope remain at approximately 80% complete on the toe of sub-area 2-3 and approximately 50% complete on the toe ofsub-area 4. These slopes appeazed stable. Pit 5 consists ofindependent piles ofmaterial with one lift currently being constructed in the northwest area of the pit. The stockpiled material that had been on the lower portion of sub-azea 2-3 has been spread. A groundwater monitoring well had been drilled between sub-areas 1 and 2-3. To date no water has accumulated in the well. At the end of the fourth quarter a total of I ,864,744 tons of refuse have been placed in sub-area 2-3, a total of 1,302,316 tons of refuse have been placed on sub-area 4, and a total of 215,024 tons of refuse have been placed in sub-area Sa. A total of4 compaction tests were performed on sub-area 5-a. All of the compaction tests exceeded 100 % of Proctor for the refuse material. No other lifts were laid down during quarter. Both the topsoil and subsoil piles for sub-areas 2-3 and 4 have been seeded and are stable. All of
