• follow Weber and Wittman (1992); common names cited may be found in Beetle (1970),
Nickerson et al. (1976), or SCS (1979). Cross reference to the substantially revised
scientific nomenclature for the flora of Western Colorado, as set forth by Weber (1987), may
be determined by reference to Weber and Wittman (1992). References for noxious weeds
included Thornton et al.(1974) and Routt Co. Extension Agent, personal communication
(1993).
Photographic Record
Within the sampled reclamation area, representative color photographs were taken to document
the appearance of the vegetation in 1996. Within each photo, a placard identifies the
reclamation area being illustrated.
Statistical Methods
Sample adequacy calculations were carried out using the formula as prescribed by CMLRB
(1 988):
t2 s2
Nmin =
d2 x2
where:
t = two-tailed t-value with n-1 degrees of freedom
s2 = sample variance (based sn_i)
d = 0.1 (level of precision or desired detectable reduction)
x =sample mean
Climatic Data
Precipitation data from the nearby Seneca II Mine for the period of January 1982 through July
1996 were provided by SCC. Since the long-term average for the mine exists for only 10
years, the long term average monthly precipitation data from the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the nearby town of Hayden was used as an appropriate
base for comparison. Information on degree-days was also derived from the NOAA records at
Hayden. (temperature data for Hayden were not, at the time of writing, officially published;
•
4
