• Sulfate
As with several other constituents, sulfate concentrations at Spring 3 have remained
consistent over the past water years, while concentrations at Spring 4 have decreased
during the same time period. Spring 3 concentrations ranged from 1440 to 2300 mg/L
and Spring 4 concentrations ranged from 1100 to 2150 mg/L during the same time period.
This water year, sulfate concentrations were significantly elevated in both springs during
the December 2001 and March 2002 sampling. Whether this change is significant is not
yet appazent.
Trace Elements
Many trace elements were consistently found to be near or below the detectable limits for
all springs for the 2002 water yeaz. These same trace elements have historically been
found to be at or below detectable limits. They aze aluminum, ammonia, arsenic,
cadmium, copper, iron (both total and dissolved), lead, mercury, molybdenum, nitrite,
nitrate, nitrate/nitrite, phosphate, selenium, and zinc.
RESULTS -MONITORING WELLS FOR WATER YEAR 2002
Three groundwater monitoring wells were sampled during the 2002 water yeaz. The wells
• sampled are designated 17-B, 94-1, and 95-1. Well 17-B is 600 feet west of the corner of
the northwest permit boundary within Carbon Junction Canyon. Well 94-1 is located
adjacent to the east edge of the south pit. Well 95-1 is located approximately 850 feet
south-southwest of the future pit boundary. Well 17-B is located upgradient of any
disturbance related to mining. Well 94-1 is located within the area disturbed by mining,
and well 95-1 is located downgradient and outside the proposed coal mining disturbance.
As such, these wells (94-1 and 95-1) would be expected to show any changes resulting
from mining disturbance. These wells may also show changes to groundwater due to
adjacent sand and gravel mining on Ewing Mesa.
Wells 17-B and 94-1 were sampled quarterly during this water year. During the first
quarter of the water yeaz, field parameters were not collected for these two wells. Well
95-1 was sampled three times during the 2002 water yeaz. There was some initial
confusion regarding the wells location that was later corrected. Field parameters were
only collected during the September 2002 sampling of we1195-1. Summaries of sampling
data from the groundwater wells for the 2001 water year are contained in Tables 3, 4, and
5.
Depth to Water
The water level in well 17-B decreased slightly during this water year though the depth
remained within historic fluctuations. Water depth at we1194-1 decreased this water year;
Carbon JunctAon Mlne Page 7
Annual Hydrologic Raportfor Water Year 2002
