LJ <br />Report Background <br />' In July of 1981, West Elk Coal Company (WECC) received permits to <br />mine from the U. S. Office of Surface Mining and the Colorado <br />Mined Land Reclamation Division for its Mt. Gunnison No. 1 <br />Mine. The permits were approved with stipulations, including <br />several which outlined information to be submitted in an annual <br />hydrology report. Hydrologic analysis and information specifi- <br />tally called for are: <br />' o Water quantity and quality data from the USGS gaging <br />' station on the North Fork Gunnison River near Somerset <br />to be included in the annual hydrology report (MLRD <br />' Stipulation No. 9, OSM Stipulation No. 4). <br />e o An analysis of all hydrologic data gathered during the <br />year (MLRD Stipulation No. 25, OSM Stipulation No. 10). <br />' o An assessment of impacts of mining on the quality and <br /> quantity of water in surface streams, springs, ground- <br />i water aquifers, mine inflows and mine discharges during <br /> the year (MLRD Stipulation No. 25, OSM Stipulation No. <br />' <br /> 10). <br /> <br /> o An estimate of projected impacts of mining on the <br /> quality and quantity of water in surface streams, <br />' springs, groundwater aquifers, mine inflows and mine <br /> -1 <br /> <br />
