STAFF COMMENTS:
The Twentymile Coal Company was issued a Special Use Permit (93-233) on August 24, 1993
for the expansion of underground coal mining operations beyond its present permit area and
beyond the mining zone. The permit added approximately 7,689 acres to the previously
permitted area. The expanded area lies beneath approximately seven miles of RCR 27 and
RCR 33.
The 3100 foot section of RCR 27 in question is built into the base of a portion of the Twentymile
Sandstone Cliff. This area is due to be undermined by the expanded coal extraction activities in
tha latter half of 1995 as allowed by SUP #93-233. The undermining may cause subsidence
which may increase the danger of rock and debris falls from the cliff onto areas that include the
existing alignment of RCR 27.
The Colorado Department of Minerals and Geology along with Twentymile Caal Company were
concerned with public safety in regards to the increased potential of rockfall on to this portion of
