1
J
Patricia Nelson
July 28, 1993
Page 2
maintain a sufficiently low water level in the pond to prevent
leaking so that the structural integrity of the embankment was
preserved. The dewatering activities caused relatively high
discharge velocities to occur, which in turn caused higher than
normal suspended sediment levels to occur. PWCC plans to repair
the outlet pipe in the near future.
At Outfall 006, the April TSS average was 37 mg/1, which exceeds
the monthly average limit of 35 mg/1. This noncompliance
average TSS value is due to a 52 mg/1 TSS measurement made on
4/13/93. A subsequent TSS measurement made at this site on
4/15/93 was only 22 mg/1, indicating that high TSS levels were
present at this site for only a short period of time. The TSS
value of 52 mg/1 was due to snowmelt runoff, since Pond 006 had
not received mine pit pumpage (i.e., mine drainage) in the
recent past, and no spoil springs or truck wash facilities exist
in the basin upstream of Pond 006. PWCC has unsuccessfully
requested that, during periods of stormwater runoff, this site ~-,-
be exempt from TSS limits, and that emits be applicable per " ''
Federal NPDES guidelines. A settleable solids measurement of
<0.4 ml/1 was measured at this site on 4/13/93, which meets
standard stormwater runoff limits.
Please contact Brad Dingee of my staff if you have any questions
or require additional information.
Sincerely,
~~
Gary W.
