RULE 2.41 6 AN APPRAISAL OF THE SUCCESS OF RECLAMATION EFFORTS, AND
IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE OF ANY EFFORTS, A SHORT NARRATIVE ON THE
SUSPECTED OR DETERMINED CAUSE OF SUCH FAILURE.
Although there is not a great deal which can be assessed, what there
is shows some very interesting and important patterns. Much of what is
discussed here is derived from the revegetation of the visual berm. Next
year some indications will be available as to reclamation of the quarry
benches themselves.
It is clear that limestone waste can be revegetated to an excellent
condition if it is covered with topsoil. It has also been learned that
growth on limestone waste covered with topsoil can be outstanding with
production on the order of 3000 to 4000 pounds per acre in the second year.
The work on the visual berm has also shown that many species of shrubs and
trees can be successfully established in soil covered limestone waste
media.
It is currently being determined whether similar success can be
obtained from plantings of similar materials in the quarry. This is being
tested by actually reclaiming some of the first bench areas in Phase I of
the quarry. From this first year planting, suitable modifications will be
made to the seed mix depending upon the kind of success achieved in this
first planting.
RULE 2.41 7 ESTIMATES OF THE LOCATION AND NUMBER OF ACRES TO BE
AFFECTED IN THE COMING YEAR.
It is anticipated that during the next year, the mining will continue
in the Phase I area. Because of the depressed aggregate market, it is not
known how much rock will be removed, but it is expected that at least one
more lift will be taken from the Phase I area. It is possible, if the
demand increases, that the most northern portions of Phase II will be
initiated in the next year, but this is not likely.
Pending approval of the water amendment, which will be presented to
the MLRB at about the time this report will be submitted, a water line and
pond as described in that amendment will be installed in the next year.
This will greatly modify the ability of the operation to wash rock and
control dust and noise as well as possibly having some impact on the
revegetation of selected areas through making available a source of water
for irrigation if needed. This could prove especially beneficial if
extensive tree plantings are done in visually sensitive locations.
MAP: Attached is a map prepared on the newly acquired and installed
computer mapping system. All future annual report maps will be prepared on
these types of maps. The system permits not only 2-dimensional mapping to
great accuracy and precise scaling, but also permits 3-dimensional modeling
of topography which will be useful in designing reclamation and mining
plans for areas exhibiting rough topography.
Page 3 of 3 1988 SNYDER QUARRY ANNUAL REPORT
