In The 1 sq.m. grazing exclosures of the PECOCO Pasture, 50 points were confined to the
protected circle and projected along parallel mini-transacts using aone-meter Cover-Point
Model 4, with points no closer than 10 cm apart.
Production sampling was done in all reclamation areas (except 1991 reclaimed areas}, and the
two reference areas. Herbaceous production sampling was accomplished using one-half square
meter (0.5 m2) circular quadrats within which all herbaceous growth in a vertical projection
was removed by clipping, and placed in labeled paper bags. Alfalfa (Medica°o ;;atival, when it
occurred, was placed in separate labeled bags. Production sampling intensity in the reclaimed
areas was in some cases greater than cover sampling, so that in addition to the ten to twenty-
five production samples taken in association with the cover transacts, up to twenty-five more
were located independently, making a total of as many as fifty (50) such samples in reclaimed
areas.
Production samples within each reclaimed area or reference area were numbered as follows:
r 1
LJ
Pre-law Reclaimed Areas none
1986 Reclaimed Areas 1 5
1989 Reclaimed Areas 5 0
1991 Reclaimed Areas none
Wadge Pasture 5 0
Wadge Pasture '91 2 0
Mountain Brush Reference Area 15
Sagebrush Reference Area 15
Clipped material was returned to the ESCO laboratory and dried at 105 °C for 24 hours, then
weighed to the nearest 0.1 gm.
Shrub density sampling was undertaken in all reclamation areas, and the two reference areas.
Shrub density in reclaimed areas was measured within 2 x 50 m quadrats ('belt transacts')
•
3
