• shown on the map potted from computer memory. These sample points were located as
Cover Samolina
Cover data were collected using a point intercept method in which data are tabulated as
interceptions of a point with plant species, standing dead plant material, bare soil, litter, or
rock. Each point was optically projected using aCover-Point Model 3, developed by ESCO
Associates, Inc. (Model 4 was used in the PECOCO Pasture areas (see below)). Each sample
consisted of a randomly located and randomly oriented 50 m transact, along which 50 sample
points were systematically arranged. The number of cover transacts that were placed in each
reclaimed area or reference area was as follows:
accurately as possible in the field. Final location of production quadrats was accomplished by a
blind throw of the sampling hoop; cover and density sample transacts were located and oriented
using a blind throw of a meter stick. In the PECOGO Pasture, sampling of cover and production
was confined to ungrazed areas protected within 1 sq.m. grazing exclosures placed in the field by
PWCC at random locations.
Pre-Law Reclaimed Areas 2 5
1986 Reclaimed Areas 1 5
1989 Reclaimed Areas 25
1991 Reclaimed Areas 1 0
Wadge Pasture 2 0
Wadge Pasture '91 1 0
PECOCO Pasture 1 5
Mountain Brush Reference 1 0
Sagebrush Reference 1 0
First hit interceptions were used to calculate absolute top layer (first hit) foliar cover by
dividing the number of interceptions for a particular species or material by the total number of
points taken (50). First hit relative vegetation cover was calculated by dividing first hit
absolute cover for each species by the total first hit vegetation cover. All-layer absolute cover
was calculated by dividing all hits for a particular species by the total number of points taken
(50). In addition, all-layer relative cover was calculated using all hits for a particular species
divided by the total hits accumulated during sampling of the transact.

2
