RESULTS
Data from the 1993 revegetation monitoring studies at the Seneca II Mine are presented in
Tables 1 through 26 contained in Appendix 1. The list of plant species observed during these
studies in the reclaimed and reference areas are included in Table 27 in Appendix 2. Seed mixes
applied on areas revegetated prior to 1981 and in years 1981 through 1991 are included for
reference in Appendix 3. Site data from sample transacts (orientation, slope, aspect, and
initials of samplers) are included as Appendix 4. Photographs of representative locations
within the reclaimed areas sampled in 1993, as well as photographs of the Mountain Brush and
Sagebrush reference areas are included in Appendx 5. Graphic depiction of summaries of
vegetation data, precipitation, and total degree days are presented in Figures 1 through 10 of
this report, starting on page 36. In the following descriptions, species that were encountered
quantitatively (i.e. 'hit' by a sample point) are described first for a particular lifeform;
species listed as 'also present were not hit but were present within one meter to either side of
the sample transact.
Pre-Law Reclaimed Areas (Photographs 1 through 3)
Cover
Introduced perennial cool season grasses dominated this reclamation unit with 50.4 percent of
total vegetation cover (Table 1). More than half of this percentage was provided by
intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyp~m intermedium). Smooth brome (Bromppsis inermisl
contributed almost all of the remaining half of Phis percentage. Other species contributing to
this lifeform's total vegetation cover were; desert wheatgrass (Aaroovr on cristatum and A.
cristatum ssp. desertoruml, meadow barley (Critesion brachvantheru ml, orchard grass
(Dac lie glomeratal, tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceal, timothy (Phle um pratensel, and
Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensisl. Meadow fescue (Festuca pLtens isl and bristlegrass
(Setaria viridisl were also present. Native perennial cool season grasses and grass-like plants
accounted for 2.7 percent of total vegetation cover. More than haH of this cover percentage was
contributed by Agassiz bluegrass (Poa agassizensisl. Other species offering measurable cover
were beaked sedge (Carex utriculatal, (oxtail barley (Critesio~iubatu ml, slender wheatgrass
(~~j/mus trachy a ~I ~~ ssp. trachycaulusl, American manna-grass (Glvi ceria gfandisl, and
Canada bluegrass (Poa comnressa). Mountain brome (Ceratochloa cari natal, sheep fescue
(Festuca brachvohvlla ssp. coloradensisl, western wheatgrass (Pasc opyrum smithiil,
•
7
