1
Two grass species were encountered during cover sampling in the reference area.
' Bromus japonicas/tectorum dominated at 29.0% mean cover (80.4% relative cover).
fiilaria jamesii comprised 1.4% mean cover and 3.7% relative cover.
' Annual fort species were represented by siz species in this transect. Descurainia
Sophia and Ceratocepha/a orthoceras each comprised 0.6% mean cover (1.6% relative
' cover). I~pidium montanum accounted for 0.4% mean cover (1.1 % relative), while
Chorispora tenella and Lappula redows&ii each represented 0.2% mean cover and 0.8%
and 0.5% relative cover each. Sphaera/cea coccinea (Scarlet Globemallow) accounted
' for 0.2% mean cover and 0.5 % relative cover. t7puntia polyacantha (Prickly Pear)
represented the succulent component in this area with 0.2% mean cover and 0.5%
relative cover.
'
Atriplex confertifo/ia comprised 3.0% mean cover and 8.7% relative cover while
Atriplex obovata (Obovate Saltbush) accounted for 0.2% mean cover and 0.5% relative
' cover.
Herbaceous Production

Sample adequacy for herbaceous production sampling was achieved after five
herbaceous production quadrats were sampled. Total herbaceous production for the
z
' Reference Area was 98.22 g/m
(874.16 lblac). Total production value on the
Reference Area was roughly at the mid-point of all areas sampled. Bromus
japonicas/tectorum dominated production with 88.16 g/m2 and 89.8% of total
production. Four perennial grasses accounted for 4.72 g/m2 representing 4.8% of total
production. Sisymbrium altissimum (Jim Hill Mustard) was the major contributor to
annual forb production with 4.8 g/mz and 4.8% of total production. Herbaceous
production sampling results for the Shadscale Shrubland Reference Area are presented
in Table 28.
i
i
es D
Spec
versity
Five lifeforms were represented on this treatment plot. Perennial and annual grasses
were each represented by one species. Annual fortis were represented by five species,
succulents had one species represented, and woody plants three species. Only three
' lifeforms had representatives accounting for greater than three percent relative cover;
perennial grasses, annual grasses, and woody plants with one species each.
44
