Bromus japonicus/tectorum at 33.6% mean cover (78.3Y'o relative cover) was the
dominant grass species. Agropyron cristatum at 2.03'o mean cover (4.43'o relative
cover) and Agropyron smithii with 0.4% mean cover and 0.88% relative cover were the
other grasses present in this transect.
Annual forbs were represented by three species in this transect. IJiescurainia Sophia
comprised 2.8% mean cover (6.2% relative cover), Ceratocephala orthoceras 0.8%
mean cover (1.84'o relative), and Chorispora tenella (Blue Mustard) accounted for
0.4% mean and 0.9% relative cover.
The woody shrubs Atriplex rnnfertifolia and AtripJex canescens each accounted for
1.6% mean cover and 4.0% and 3.5 % relative cover respectively.
Herbaceous Production
Total herbaceous production was 81.16 g/mz (722.32 Ib/ac) on this treatment plot.
Bromus japonicus/tectorum dominated the herbaceous production at 50.88 g/m2 or
62.7% of total production. The perennial grasses Agropyron cristatum and Elymus
junceus accounted for 15.16 g/m2 and 18.7% of total production. Chorispora tenella
accounted for 10.26 g/m2 total production. Annual forbs (including Chorispora
tenella) produced 15.12 g/mz for 18.6% of the total herbaceous production. Table 14
contains herbaceous production results for this treatment.
Woody Plant Density and Dimensiotu
Three woody plant species on this plot were represented by 83 individuals, providing a
density of 786/acre. Nearly equivalent in numbers were Atriplex canescens and
Atrip/ex conlertifolia, followed by Sarcobatus rermicu/atus. The largest woody plant
was an AtripJex canescens individual measuring 91 cm high and 134 cm in diameter.
Woody Plant information is presented in Tables 29 and 30.
Species Diversity
Five lifeforms were represented on this treatment plot. Perennial and annual grasses
were represented by two and one species respectively, annual forbs by three species,
woody plants with two species, and cryptogams by one species. Of these lifeforms,
perennial grasses, annual grasses, and annual forbs were each represented by one
species with greater than three percent relative cover while woody plants had two
species accounting for greater than three percent relative cover.
36
