1

3.1 Format and Background
In this section results will be presented from the 1993 vegetation and soil sampling.
Comparison of 1993 results with sampling results from 1983, 1986, and 1988 will be
presented in Section 4.0 Discussion. Results of 1993 sampling will be presented in the
following order: cover, herbaceous production, woody plant density and dimensions,
and species diversity by sample location (Test Plots, North and South Areas, Reference
Area), followed by Test Plot soil chemistry.
' Table 2 lists the plant species which were encountered during cover, production, and
woody plant density quantitative sampling on the Test Plots, North and South Areas,
and Shadscale Shrubland Reference Area during the 1993 season. Numerous other
t plant species were observed in all locations. For a comprehensive listing of adjacent
species see Table 2 of the 1986 report (WRDC, 1986).
3.1.1 Test Plot 1

1

Test Plot 1 is located on the top surface of the Roadside RDA at the south mazgin. It is
bounded on the west by the outslope of the RDA, on the south and east by steep native
slopes, and on the north by the Roadside Mine Storage Area. Test Plot 1 is fenced
from disturbance and intrusion. There aze four soil treatment depths represented in
Test Plot 1; 48", 6", 24", and 12" (from north to south). Each treatment depth plot is
20 feet wide by 150 feet long. There is no predominant aspect to the test plot, and the
prevailing grade is very low (< 1.0 degree). Prevailing wind direction appeared to be
from the north, based on field observation and presence of wind distributed native
plants. Figures 5-8 provide photographic illustrations of Test Plot 1 treatments.
3.1.2 Test Plot 2

Test Plot 2 is located on the west facing slope of the Roadside RDA neaz the mid-point
of the slope face. It is bounded on the west by the permit boundary and I-70, on the
north and south by different slope faces of the RDA, and on the east by the top of the
RDA. Test Plot 2 is not fenced, but is identified by perimeter posts and signs to
prevent disturbance and intrusion. There are three soil treatment depths represented in
Test Plot 2; 12" 6", and 24" (from north to south). Each treatment depth plot is 20
feet wide by 230 feet long. The predominant aspect of the test plot is west, and the
prevailing grade is very steep, averaging 24 degrees. Prevailing wind direction
appeared to be from the north, based on field observation. Figures 9-11 provide
photographic illustrations of Test Plot 2 treatments.
14
