.f
:r -
-2-
The cover parameter for the riparian community averaged 45.6% which exceeds
the 44.3% cover standard.
Production for the community averaged 1696 lbs/ac. which exceeds the required
1606 lbs/ac. to meet the 90% of standard.
Woody stem density for the community averaged 1053 stems/ac. which exceeds the
1000 stemsfac. standard.
Species diversity for the riparian area meets all but one requirement. There
are only two cool season bunch grass species instead of the required three
species.
Recommendations
In order to facilitate bringing the revegetated areas of Blue Ribbon Mine up
to the standards required, please consider the following recommendations:
*Interseed the flat area of the grassland with cool season bunch grasses
(possibly species native to the surrounding area but not included in the
seed mix previously used) which, if successful, will improve percent
cover, vegetative productivity and diversity parameters. (Note: Keep in
mind that if Blue Ribbon Mine is in its sixth year of the liability
period, their 10 year period will start over with this interseeding).
*Redesignate all or a portion of the east riparian area as grassland. It
appears, in pre-mining maps, that most of this area was not a riparian
area before mining, with the exception of the area now occupied by pond
five. This change should improve the diversity of the grassland area and
help both communities move closer to achieving sample adequacy for all
parameters.
*One observation I made addresses the splitting of each community to
achieve standards of some parameters while joining the halves together to
satisfy other parameter standards. The sampling data should not be
manipulated to satisfy the revegetation standards on paper. One course
of action should be chosen and adhered to.
SSS/eke
2684E
