The mine site is split Into two areas, a
riparian area and a grassland area. These areas are inturn split into two
areas, the east and west riparian areas and the slope and flat grassland areas.
There are four success criteria for revegetation. Percent Cover, Production,
Woody Stem Density and Species Diversity. Cover, production and woody stem
density must ali meet sample adequacy. That means the success standard for
each must be met within a statistically derived number of samples (5-15). In
this report, none of the parameters were sampled to adequacy in either the
grassland or the riparian area except for the percent cover in the grassland.
After viewing the mine site, I believe that sample adequacy for cover can be
met in both areas by redesignating the east riparian area as grassland. Its
vegetative cover more closely resembles the grassland.
Productivity in both areas will probably not meet sample adequacy until a few
more growth years have passed. Productivity data would be better if the lm2
quadrat was used in sampling (as described in the permit) instead of the
.25m2 quadrat used for this monitoring.
Woody stem density is rarely ever sampled to adequacy due to the small numbers
of stems/ac. required and the "patchiness" of shrub establishment.
Successful revegetation is defined as meeting 907, of each success standard
Dr~e~ r~
delineated in the permit. Success standards are the same for 4over~ ands y
production for b~th vegetative communities. ~~ody S}~M pans,+y s~4.,~~ds o,ce
cor-rrnunr~y Spec, c.
In the grassland community cover averaged 33.87 and needs to achieve 39.97. to
meet the 907 of standard. This should be attainable in years nine and ten of
the liability period. Production for the community averaged 1397 lbs/ac. and
needs to achieve 1606 lbs/ac. which should be no problem by years nine and ten
of the liability period. Woody stem density for the community averaged 119
stems/ac. which exceeds the standard of 100 stems/ac.
Species diversity for the grassland meets all but one requirement. There is
only one established cool season bunch grass species instead of the required
three species.
