1997 Annual Hydrologic Report <br />Page 4 <br />therefore information prior to December 1992 may not be representative of future <br />trends. <br />Discharge point 003 was utilized for discharging water pumped out of the old Cameo <br />Mine and has not been used since 1979. There is no new information for this site this <br />Year. <br />Discharge point 004 continued to be used all Year to discharge from the Roadside <br />North Portal. Flow information is given in the Mine Water section of this report. A <br />listing of weekly monitoring results is given on data pages SF-15 and 16 and the result <br />of the annual full suite analysis is presented on data page SP-5 . Table S97-4 is a <br />statistical summary of water quality data collected since 1979. Diagram S97-3 is a <br />graph relating TDS at outfall 004 to time prepared to incorporate a Lowess Smooth Plot <br />(nearness = 0.5). The wide variation in TDS is a function of the source of the water at <br />the time of discharge. The primary sources are the portal ramp underdrain represented <br />by location 1 for the Roadside North Portal in the Mine Water section, active area mine <br />• inflows and sealed area inflows at location 8. <br />There were three non-compliant discharge events during the Year at outfall 004. All <br />were for high total suspended solids. The two that occurred on December 12, 1996 <br />and January 14, 1997 resulted in NOV C-97-001 being issued by the DMG. The NOV <br />was issued for failure to ensure that water discharged from an underground mine <br />complies with all Federal and State Laws and Regulations. The abatement step was to <br />develop a water treatment plan. The Operator designed a mine water treatment pond <br />as its water treatment plan. The pond was constructed during the fourth quarter of <br />1997. <br />The third non-compliant discharge occurred on September 23, 1997. An investigation <br />into the cause of the high suspended solids revealed what appeared to be a sampling <br />error. A major storm event deposited a couple of feet of sediment in the bottom of Coal <br />Creek and covered outfall 004. Apparently the sampling technician took the sample <br />where the mine water was bubbling up through the gravel and cobble and <br />contaminated the water sample. The end on the discharge pipe was dug out and <br />elevated so good sampling protocol could be practiced in the future. <br />• <br />
