When drilling seed, mix sufficient quantities so that the seed boxes are
adequately filled to obtain uniform drilling rates. Our seed was weiyhted
prior to planting which resulted in small quantities of seed requiring hand
feeding into the drop tubes. This may have produced a less uniform seeding.
When using a land imprinter, broadcast the seed in front of the imprinter. At
Iā¢lormon Gap, the seed was drilled then imprinted, which could have pushed the
seed too deep to obtain satisfactory seedling establishment.
When using more than one seed mixture be sure to randomize the treatments
between replications. We did not randomize the seed mixtures. Therefore,
seed mix C was planted in all three replications along the fence on the
western boundary of the exclosure. The fence appears to be acting as a
barrier to slow the wind and seems to be depositing weed seed in the western
boundary of the exclosure.
Previously seeded species noticed during the first growing season should have
been eliminated from the exclosure. Crested wheatgrass, seeded the fall
before our seeding, was not observed prior to plot establishment. The
previously seeded crested wheatgrass was noticed During the first growing
season and should have been eliminated at that time. Now, it cannot be
distinguished from the plants seeded in seed mixture C.
Keep the individual treatments to a minimum. At Plormon Gap, our treatments
were too numerous, with 96 individual treatments, and three replications
(totaling G88 plots) to monitor without full time personnel working on
gathering and analyzing the data.
Based upon the study, herbicides are very beneficial in areas of poor range
condition. Therefore, fortis and shrubs should not be included in the seed
mixtures unless selective herbicides are used.
It is important to have good communications when several parties are involved.
8
