- Anna May mine -trash removal and general site cleanup; removal of pipes from portal
entrance; demolition and plugging of portal entrance; plugging of an associated vent
hole; topsoil distribution and seeding.
- Plugging of vent holes - a number of old vent holes and minor caved sites around vents
have been located in the vicinity of both the Great Hesper pit and the Anna May mine.
Since no maps or documentation exists to show which vents are associated with each
specific mine, all the open holes have been plugged, not only to address the reclamation
obligation, but also to eliminate hazards on the property. The plugged hole sites are left
in a mounded condition to provide for minor settling; therefore, final topsoil cover and
re-vegetation will not be conducted this fall.
- Topsoil management - In past practices, no topsoil was salvaged and stockpiled at any
of the old mine disturbances. Therefore, current reclamation relies upon re-distribution
of nearby topsoil and the distribution of selected fine material that will provide a suitable
growth medium. Special care is being taken to minimize disturbance, to protect existing
vegetated areas, and to grade and contour reclaimed sites to minimize erosion and
provide suitable sites for re-vegetation.
- Blackburn mine -trash removal and general site cleanup; re-plug portals where
slumping has occurred; re-seed aeeas where vegetation cover is sparse.
Following completion of the reclamation work, new site maps will be prepared to show the specific
locations where reclamation work has been conducted. A detail response report will be submitted,
to respond to the July ]7-18 Inspection Report, and this response will provide additional detail
descriptions of the reclamation work that has been conducted this year.
The Wilson mine is an old disturbance that has been reclaimed, and is now stable and sustaining. A
request for reclamation release for the Wilson mine was submitted to the Division on October 9,
2002.
Reclamation plans for 2003 will include inspections of the sites where work is now being
conducted. It is expected that spraying for weed control might be required at select sites. If new
vegetation efforts are not satisfactory (in view of natural precipitation and weather conditions), re-
seeding may also be conducted during 2003. The reclaimed areas will be monitored during 2003.
2
