-8-
i the old mine seems to affect the water adversely. The inflow for UG-9
is surface water on the north end of our surface disturbance boundary,
which soaks into the mine due to shallow cover, and minor amounts of
surface water that flow into the portal. This water is pumped into
the major part of the old mine to reduce the suspended solids
associated with the travelway it crosses. UG-5 (upper) is the point of
discharge of old mine water. Due to its changes after flowing to the
sump on the mine floor, UG-5 is the same water monitored at the end of
the 1 North Mains. Flow into this mine is assumed to be surface and
ground water from an area of shallow cover on the east side of the mine.
This inflow is proportional to irrigation run-off over this area.
Spring it4 probably contributes to this inflow. The flaw from UG-9
contributes an estimated 0.2 gpm to the flow of UG-5. The flow from
UG-5 has been manually regulated since August, 1982, when a hole was
drilled into the old mine and a valve installed. Total flow was cal-
culated from the flow rate times the length of time flowing. The low
pH of UG-5 (upper) and UG-9 may be a function of flow through caved roof
• material that is normally separated from the water. The pH of UG-5
(lower) must be affected by its exposure to air or its flow path on
the floor, possibly through rock dust on the floor. The pH of other
samples may be affected in a similar fashion, because they have flowed
some distance on the floor prior to sampling. The conductivity of
these samples is higher than expected from inflows from the outcrop-
subcrop. Again, this is likely to be due to roof fall material not
normally in the flowpath of this type of water.
The only location where water flowing updip is checked is in the
7 and 8 North panels. This water has been allowed to build up in
8 North with little pumping being done. Flows are estimated to be
1-2 gpm. The pH is consistant with other mine water, but the conduc-
tivity is higher. The conductivity is higher than expected when it is
compared to the E-1 coal seam well water quality.
• All of the mine inflows are drained or pumped to the main sump
where UG-6 sampling is done. Total discharge from the mine is through
