MINING AND RECLAMATION PLAN January, 1986
MT. GUNNISON N0. 1 MINE Revised June, 1990
All revegetated areas are mulched immediately following seeding operations. Slopes
less than 3:1 are mulched using straw or woad chips or other similar materials. Slopes
in excess of 3:1 are hydromulched or covered with jute netting, excelsior blankets,
or similar materials.
After seeding, revegetated areas are protected from livestock grazing until areas are
judged capable of withstanding grazing pressure based on the findings of monitoring
activities discussed in Section 4.5.3. Livestock grazing will then be undertaken only
when operational conditions allow. Protection of revegetated areas are accomplished
by excluding 'livestock from such areas by using fences, discontinuing grazing on
adjacent areas ar by other means. Such protection allows for seedling and stand
establishment and minimizes erosion.
4.4.6 Noxious Weed Control Plan
Noxious weed infestations which may occur in disturbed areas of the Mt. Gunnison No.
1 Mine site will be treated. A visual survey of the mine site will be conducte~.during
late spring or early summer of each year. Approximate locations of any infestations
will be marked on a topographic map of the mine site.
Canada thistle and white top were treated during the summer of 1990 in areas where
drainage is controlled. Spraying was carried out by hand, using backpack sprayers,
specific to the infestations. A mixture of four ounces 2,4D and one-third ounce of
Banvel per gallon of water, along with one-third ounce of wetting agent was utilized.
The Division was notified within two weeks after the applications.
In areas where there is direct drainage to public waters, methods other than herbicide
spraying will be used to control noxious weeds. If after spraying there is a lack of
vegetation in treated areas, such areas will be reseeded with the permanent seed mix
and mulched. Should future infestations require deviation from the specifics of this
plan, a revision will be submitted to the Division.
4-19
